When the Russell County Fiscal Court met last week, and the topic of hazardous duty retirement for sheriff’s deputies arose, 2nd District Magistrate Mickey Garner made his position known.
Garner said he would only support such a move if the sheriff’s office was transitioned into a fee pooling system.
Under a fee pooling system, all revenues generated by the sheriff’s office are turned over to the county treasurer who pays expenses and invoices for the sheriff’s office upon approval by the fiscal court.
Garner was a guest on Community Conversation on WJRS recently, where he discussed his position on the topic. Garner said a move to a fee pool system would be needed for him to vote in favor of the county providing hazardous duty retirement.
The fiscal court is expected to hear the first reading of an ordinance moving the sheriff’s office to a fee pooling system at next month’s fiscal court meeting.
