15-year-olds can begin applying for driver’s permit April 2

With the passage of a new law allowing 15-year-olds to apply for a driver’s permit, state officials are working to update systems for the new law.

Officials say 15-year-olds can begin making an appointment for their driver’s permit test next Wednesday, April 2.

The new law only allows more time for eligible drivers to hold a permit. State law still requires a person to be 16 to obtain an intermediate license.

Driver’s permit tests are available at the Columbia and Somerset regional offices.
