School Board Changes Vote; Votes No School on Veteran’s Day Next Year

Citing pressure from the community, the Russell County school board changed its position from one month ago, and voted last night to not have school next year on Veterans Day.

The calendar planning committee for the school system had earlier recommended that the local school district actually have school on Veterans Day later this year so that the schools could emphasize programs centered around Veterans.

One month ago, all board members voted to have school on Veterans Day next year except board member Gerald Murray, who left the board meeting after the vote last month.

Last night, however, during their monthly meeting, the board changed its mind, and voted with Murray to change the school calendar, yet again, and voted to NOT have school on Veterans Day.

As a result of Veterans Day now being a school holiday, school for next school year will now start for students on August 18th.  First day for teachers will be on August 17th.
