Construction is set to begin on a major renovation project at the historic A.J. Lloyd property in Monticello.
Congressman Hal Rogers joined local leaders for a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday at the former Wayne County High School, which Rogers attended.
The A.J. Lloyd Building will be transformed into an outdoor community center and farmers market. Plans also call for the space to host athletic events, concerts and other community activities.
An adjacent building, known as Project 606, will be renovated into modern office space for technology company Provalus, with room for more than 200 employees.
Rogers secured four-million dollars in federal Community Project Funding for the renovations. The Provalus portion is also supported by Appalachian Regional Commission and Community Development Block Grant funding.
Built in 1940 through the Works Progress Administration, the A.J. Lloyd Building was Wayne County’s first consolidated high school and later served as a middle school. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
The project is being developed by the City of Monticello, with plans designed to preserve the historic building’s façade while giving the property a new role in the community.
