Stapp’s walk-off grand slam secures 2A section championship for Lakers

With two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning of last night’s 2A Section 4 championship, Carter Stapp came up big, hitting a walk-off grand slam to left center-field that secured the championship for the Russell County Lakers over the Taylor County Cardinals by a score of 5-1.

The Lakers had standout pitching performances from Alden Brumley and Blane Melton in the win.

Brumley got the start, and gave up just one run on 5 hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out 3 batters. Melton entered in the 7th inning, giving up just 1 hit over 2 2/3 innings while striking out 4 batters.

At the plate, Jace Skaggs had a hit and an RBI, while Owen Loy had a team-high 2 hits.

With the win, the Lakers advance to the 2A state tournament in Owensboro next month.
