Over the last several weeks, we’ve reported on a bill that would allow 15-year-olds in Kentucky to apply for a driver’s permit.
Governor Andy Beshear signed that bill yesterday, making it law. The bill has an emergency clause, meaning it goes into effect immediately with its passage.
The bill would maintain the intermediate license process for 16-year-olds. Drivers could apply for a full operator’s license at 17 if they have held an intermediate license for 180 days.
More than 20 other states have similar laws in place allowing 15-year-olds to apply for a driver’s permit.
The bill easily passed through both chambers of the general assembly, with Representative Josh Branscum and Senator Rick Girdler supporting the bill.
