Wayne County man arrested for impersonating local sheriff

A Wayne County man was arrested after he reportedly messaged a woman on Facebook posing as the Wayne County Sheriff.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Ellis Godsey of Monticello was arrested on a charge of impersonating a peace officer.

The sheriff’s office says Deputy Nick Bertram responded to a woman’s residence Saturday night when she called and said a man sent her multiple messages on Facebook claiming to be Wayne County Sheriff Tim Catron and he needed the woman to come to his house to answer some questions about a suicide note.

Bertram went to the man’s residence, later identified as Godsey. While there, Godsey turned over his phone which contained the messages claiming to be the sheriff.

Godsey was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center.
