Social Security benefits will increase 8.7 percent next year, the largest increase in four decades, the Social Security Administration announced on Thursday.
The cost-of-living adjustment increase will affect more than 64 million Americans who collect Social Security.
The increased payments will begin in January where the average recipient is set to receive more than $140 extra a month, according to estimates.
The higher payments are in response to the recent rising inflation.
