Weekend baseball and softball recap

The Russell County Lakers Baseball team went 2-0 over the weekend, picking up a win over Cumberland County on Friday and a win over Boyle County on Saturday.

On Friday, the Lakers picked up a 16-5 district win over Cumberland County in 5 innings. Evan Hammond picked up the win on the mound, giving up three runs on five hits and striking out three.

Nathan Lawson paced the Lakers offense, driving in seven runs including a grand slam in the fourth inning. Hammond drove in two runs for the Lakers, while CJ Vonfumetti, Aiden Antle, Nick Aaron, and Bryce Cowell picked up one RBI each.

On Saturday, it was Lawson picking up the win on the mound for the Lakers as they defeated Boyle County 9-7.

Lawson pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up seven runs on nine hits and striking out six batters.

Lawson drove in three runs for the Lakers, as Issac Roy drove in two and Nick Aaron, Evan Hammond, and Bryce Cowell drove in one each.

The Lakers now sit at 16-4, as they prepare for another district matchup tonight on the road at Clinton County. The Lakers won the first matchup between these two squads, picking up a 5-1 victory on April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Lady Laker Softball

The Russell County Lady Lakers went 1-1 over the weekend at the Don Franklin Showcase.

The Lady Lakers picked up an 8-1 win over Corbin on Friday. Natalie Hart picked up the win on the mound, pitching a complete game while giving up just one run on eight hits and striking out ten batters.

Katie Owens and Emma Popplewell each hit a homerun for the Lady Lakers. Addy Davis, Hart, and Sophie Shearer each drove in a run for the Lady Lakers.

The Lady Lakers lost to Rockcastle County in walk-off fashion on Saturday, falling by a score of 3-2.

Tarryn Reynolds pitched six innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits while striking out four.

Sophie Shearer and Emma Popplewell each drove in a run for the Lady Lakers. Popplewell led the team with two hits.

The Lady Lakers are now 11-5 on the season and will host Barren County tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
