Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 16th, marks two years since Russell County Deputy Sheriff Josh Phipps was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Russell County Judge-Executive Randy Marcum has proclaimed Wednesday as the “Josh Phipps Day of Remembrance and Honor.”
Marcum read the proclamation during Monday morning’s meeting of the Russell County Fiscal Court and presented it to Josh’s mother, Pam Phipps.
Ms. Phipps is asking everyone to pause at some point Wednesday and say her son’s name. She also offered other ways to honor Josh, including enjoying one of his favorite meals or taking part in something he loved doing.
Deputy Phipps was killed on September 16th, 2024, while assisting Kentucky State Police and other officers in the search for an armed suspect on Bluebird Drive in Russell Springs.
The search began after the suspect reportedly fled a traffic stop, fired several shots toward a state trooper and ran from the scene. Phipps entered a camper while searching for the suspect, and moments later, officers heard gunfire from inside.
Phipps and the suspect were both found suffering from gunshot wounds. They were taken to Russell County Hospital, where both were pronounced dead.
Phipps was 38 years old and a three-year veteran of the Russell County Sheriff’s Office. He had also previously served with the Louisville Metro Police Department.
A Columbia resident and the son of Donnie and Pam Phipps, Josh enjoyed hunting, fishing, recreational shooting and spending time with his family, friends and his dog.
Wednesday’s observance gives the community an opportunity to once again say Josh’s name and honor a deputy remembered for his service, courage and ultimate sacrifice.
