The Russell County Middle School Lady Lakers advanced to the 16th District softball championship with a dramatic 7–6 victory over Metcalfe County Monday night.
Russell County fell behind 6–0 in the first inning but battled back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Keira Gallagher doubled home a run, Ava Aitken drew a bases-loaded walk and two more runs scored on a passed ball, putting the Lady Lakers ahead 7–6.
Gallagher earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on two hits over five innings while striking out six and walking none.
Gallagher, Holly Ballou, Aitken and Sophia Wilson each recorded a hit. Gallagher, Ballou and Wilson each drove in a run, while Aitken stole two bases.
Russell County will face Monroe County in the 16th District championship game this evening (Tuesday) at 6:00 p.m. at Monroe County.
