WJRS NEWS continues our special series with Russell County Schools Superintendent Michael Ford as students prepare to return to the classroom in just over three weeks.
In today’s third and final segment, Ford discusses his goals for student success during the upcoming school year, the importance of every student having a trusted adult to turn to, and why communication and involvement are key to a positive school experience.
Ford says while the district’s Comprehensive District Improvement Plan remains a top priority each year, he’s also excited about the rollout of the district’s “Portrait of a Learner” initiative.
As part of that effort, students will help create instructional videos and training materials that can be used by classmates, teachers and even the community. Ford says the project focuses not only on academic achievement, such as improving reading scores, but also on the life skills local community members say are important for long-term success. He says teachers, administrators, instructional coaches and central office staff will use the information gathered throughout the year to measure student progress and make adjustments when needed.
Ford also encourages every student to identify a trusted adult both at school and at home.
He says having someone to talk with can make a significant difference, no matter what challenges a student may be facing.
Ford adds that strong communication between students, parents and school staff, along with student involvement in school activities, are essential to helping students succeed.
The official first day for teachers is Tuesday, August 11th, with students returning to the classroom the following day, Wednesday, August 12th.
