The Columbia Police Department has implemented new virtual reality training technology aimed at better preparing officers for high-stress situations.
An Axon Global Training master instructor conducted an eight-hour course Monday on the department’s new Axon VR training headset.
The technology places officers in realistic, immersive scenarios designed to strengthen decision-making, communication, de-escalation and crisis intervention skills. Officers can also experience situations from the perspective of community members to help build greater empathy and understanding.
Chief Evan Burton says the investment reflects the agency’s commitment to modern training methods and professional, accountable and community-focused law enforcement services.
