A woman was pronounced dead following a jet ski accident on Lake Cumberland Tuesday night.
Russell County Search and Rescue officials say they were called out at about 6 p.m. Tuesday to the Alligator 1 boat ramp after reports came in that a person had fallen off a jet ski, entered the water, and did not resurface.
A witness told search and rescue officials the jet ski crossed the lake and struck the bank. First responders located the jet ski still running and in gear, and after a brief search, the individual was located in the water.
Search and rescue officials secured the individual and transported them to an awaiting EMS unit, where they were later pronounced dead.
The Russell County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 55-year-old LaDonna Gail Wasson of the Jabez community.
Wasson was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort for a more detailed examination to determine a cause of death.
There were some initial reports of a second person in the water, but Search and Rescue Commander Chris Money told WJRS News that rescue crews searched the water and determined there was only one victim in the accident.
Russell County EMS, the Russell County Coroner’s Office, Russell County Emergency Management, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, and Russell County Dispatch also assisted.
