The Russell County Board of Education met in special session this morning.
The board took the initial first steps to create a new practice area for the Laker Band.
The band has traditionally practiced in the parking lot in front of the middle school. The new proposed area would repurpose the old tennis courts behind the high school into a practice space.
Superintendent Michael Ford spoke to WJRS News about what the project aims to entail.
The board will also look to use capital outlay funds to pay for the project. These are funds school districts can only use for things like construction projects.
The board approved a BG-1 for the project at this morning’s meeting, which does not lock the school district into anything, but is needed to move forward with the project.
A representative from Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects told the board the project could go out to bid in August if everything goes according to plan.
