Yesterday, Governor Andy Beshear announced highway fatalities in Kentucky decreased in 2024 to 707 deaths, the lowest mark in the last 10 years.
That was a decrease from 814 reported fatalities in 2023.
Of those 707 highway fatalities last year, 47 were in the 10-county Lake Cumberland area. That includes Russell, Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, McCreary, Pulaski, Taylor and Wayne counties.
That was a decrease from 56 highway fatalities in the Lake Cumberland area in 2023.
Nearly half of all reported motor vehicle fatalities in Kentucky involve drivers or passengers not wearing a seat belt.
According to state data, 19 percent of fatalities involved alcohol and one-third involved speeding or aggressive driving.
