Slight Property Tax Rate Decrease Proposed for Russell County Schools

Tax rates in the Russell County School District are expected to remain mostly unchanged, with a slight decrease proposed for real property.

The rates recommended by Superintendent Michael Ford were unanimously approved by the school board during its regular monthly meeting Monday evening.

However, the rates will not become final until the board’s September meeting. That’s due to changes in the tax-rate approval process passed by the Kentucky General Assembly earlier this year.

Ford explains the proposed rates and the new process.

Ford says that even with the proposed decrease in the real property tax rate, the district would still receive additional revenue because of higher property valuations.

He also noted that the school board has been able to lower the property tax rate by larger amounts in recent years.
