Diverse Community Group Creates “Portrait of a Learner”

Russell County Schools has launched a new initiative aimed at identifying the skills and qualities students should develop before graduation.

Superintendent Michael Ford says the district’s “Portrait of a Learner” was created through the work of a diverse group representing local businesses, faith-based organizations, education, healthcare, students and other parts of the community.

Ford says the group met three times to discuss what the community needs and expects from its students—and what the school district should instill in them before they graduate and take their next steps.

We asked Superintendent Ford what is next for the “Portrait of a Learner” initiative.

Ford described the group’s work as one of the most important projects undertaken by the district in recent memory.
