A Lexington man has been identified as the victim of a weekend drowning on Lake Cumberland.
Russell County Coroner Mark Coots told WJRS NEWS the victim is 42-year-old Andy Schmidt of Lexington.
The 911 call was received just before 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon. According to Coots, Schmidt and friends had been camping at Wolf Creek Landing, across the lake from Lake Cumberland Marina.
Schmidt and a friend were swimming when Schmidt reportedly began struggling, went beneath the water and did not resurface.
Russell County Search and Rescue personnel and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officers began searching the area Saturday afternoon. Divers from the Campbellsville–Taylor County Rescue Squad also assisted.
After nearly eight hours, the recovery operation was suspended around 10:30 Saturday night and resumed shortly after 8 o’clock Sunday morning.
Schmidt’s body was located and recovered just before 9:30 Sunday morning.
The incident occurred in eastern Russell County near Lake Cumberland Marina, formerly known as Alligator Dock #1.
