Russell County Lady Laker junior Addison Coffey (#3) has etched her name into school history, becoming the all-time leading career scorer for the Russell County High School varsity soccer program – boys’ and girls’ combined.
Coffey reached the milestone during a dominant stretch this August. On August 13, she opened the run with 2 goals and an assist in a win over Casey County. Then, on August 18, she exploded for 5 goals against McCreary County, joining the exclusive 100-goal club and closing out the game with 102 career goals. Just two days later, on August 20, she added 4 more goals against Rockcastle, pushing her total to 106 career goals and officially breaking the previous school record.
Coffey’s scoring prowess didn’t start with this season. She closed out her middle school career with an additional 184 goals before stepping straight onto the varsity roster as a freshman – a starting spot she has held through her sophomore year and into her current junior campaign.
Giving Credit Where It’s Due
Coffey was quick to share the credit for her achievement. She gave a special thanks to Coach Cheryl Newby, who has coached her since sixth grade, for her guidance throughout the years. Coffey also emphasized that scoring goals has never been a solo effort.
“It takes the whole team to allow me to make a goal,” Coffey said, extending her gratitude to every past and present Lady Laker who helped make the school record possible.
Beyond the Scoreboard
Coffey’s impact reaches well beyond the soccer field. She is an active member of the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) club and attends The Springs Church. In 2024, she became the first KHSAA referee under the age of 16, and she now spends her spare time officiating middle school and club soccer matches.
This summer, Coffey became the first FCA Kentucky member under the age of 18 to travel to Egypt on a missionary trip. She was also named a Rogers Scholar this year, adding another honor to a standout year both on and off the field.
Looking Ahead
Coffey plans to attend Western Kentucky University, where she hopes to major in Sports Medicine while continuing her soccer career at the collegiate level.
As she heads into the remainder of her junior season, Addison Coffey leaves behind a legacy of records – and a reminder that success, in her words, is always a team effort.
