Russell County High School is gearing up for another busy year of athletics with several facility improvements and additional support for game-day operations.
During Monday night’s meeting of the Russell County Board of Education, Athletic Director Michael Carpenter told board members the high school hosted approximately 250 sporting events during the last school year. Carpenter noted that figure includes only high school events and does not include contests held at the middle school.
At the recommendation of Superintendent Michael Ford on behalf of the athletic department, the board unanimously approved three event manager positions at an annual stipend of $3,000 each to help oversee the growing number of athletic events.
Board members also approved the purchase of new benches for the First National Bank Athletic Complex at a cost not to exceed $8,000.
The Athletic Director also announced that Laker Gym will soon receive a new state-of-the-art scoreboard and control system. The project is expected to cost approximately $107,000 and will be funded entirely through an anonymous donor. Carpenter noted the current scoreboards are now more than 20 years old and said the new system will be a significant upgrade for the school’s athletic programs.
The improvements are expected to be completed in the very near future.
