The Lake Cumberland Area remains under an Extreme Heat Warning from the National Weather Service today, and the weather service has extended that warning to go through the late evening Friday.
The weather service says heat index values are expected to surpass 100 degrees over the coming days, with a range of 105 to 115 degrees.
Officials warn prolonged heat exposure can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially for older adults, young children, and those working or exercising outdoors.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned buildings when possible, and avoid spending extended time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day. When necessary to be outside, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and try to plan outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours if possible.
Also, be sure to check on relatives and neighbors, and never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle. Interior temperatures can become deadly within just a few minutes.
