Russell County Airport continues to see increased activity as more visitors and aircraft make use of the facility, according to Airport Board Chairman John Stivers.
In the second part of this WJRS NEWS special report, Stivers says there has been a noticeable increase in air traffic at the Russell County Airport over the past several years. While a variety of aircraft use the airport, he says many of the visitors are traveling to the Lake Cumberland area for recreation and tourism.
Stivers says the airport serves the community in many ways beyond economic development. In addition to supporting local businesses and tourism, the airport provides an important transportation resource for emergency services, business travel and general aviation.
The airport also continues to make improvements. Stivers says the latest project involves the construction of a new T-hangar, and the airport maintains an updated Airport Layout Plan with the Federal Aviation Administration and its aviation consultants to help guide future development.
The airport board is also actively pursuing outside funding opportunities. Stivers says board members continually monitor available state and federal grants and are encouraged by the strong support both levels of government continue to show for general aviation projects.
