Russell, Wayne County men among those to receive posthumous pardons from Governor for helping slaves escape

Two men from Russell and Wayne counties are among over 40 individuals to receive a posthumous pardon from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.

These individuals were charged with harboring, aiding, or enticing Black slaves to escape enslavement.

Josiah Ward was convicted in Russell County and was imprisoned from 1853 to 1857.

John A. Kinser was convicted in Wayne County and was imprisoned from 1854 to 1864.

The governor signed the pardon for 43 individuals during a special ceremony on Monday, ahead of the Juneteenth holiday on Friday.
