An Indiana man has entered a guilty plea to charges of illegally trafficking a firearm that Kentucky State Police say was involved in the fatal shooting of Russell County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Phipps.
According to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 41-year-old Shawn Michael Kays entered a guilty plea after he was accused of transporting and transferring a nine millimeter pistol to a convicted felon.
A criminal complaint filed on September 19 alleged that firearm was later used to kill Phipps. Kays is not charged with or alleged to have been involved in the shooting.
Sentencing is scheduled for February 10, 2025. The maximum penalty is fifteen years in prison.
