Kentucky State Police Post 15 is investigating a fire at a home in nearby Monroe County that claimed the life of an 8-month-old infant.
State Police say the fire occurred Monday afternoon at a home inside the Tompkinsville city limits. The preliminary investigation says 25-year-old Ashton Wright was asleep inside the home when she woke up to heavy smoke in the house. Wright’s two children were inside the home as well.
State Police say a neighbor helped Wright get one child out of the house, but were unable to reach the other child.
Firefighters made entry into the residence and located an 8-month-old child deceased inside. The other child, a 2-year-old, was transported to the hospital for treatment of severe burns.
State Police say the preliminary investigation points to an electric space heater being the cause of the fire, but it is still currently under investigation by authorities.
