Lightning causes house fire Wednesday morning

A lightning strike was the cause of a house fire that occurred yesterday morning in the Irvins Store area of Russell County.

Eli Volunteer Fire Department Chief Marty Kazsuk told WJRS News firefighters from the Eli Fire Department were called out at around 8:15 yesterday morning to a home owned by Ted and Vicki Cain.

Crews were called out to a fire that began in the kitchen area of the home, and then began to spread. Firefighters were able to make an aggressive interior attack, according to Kazsuk, and firefighters from the Russell Springs Volunteer Fire Department were called in to assist.

Kazsuk said firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about 30 minutes. The home sustained heavy damage to the kitchen area and moderate smoke and water damage throughout. Fire crews were on scene for about 4 hours.

Russell County EMS was on standby during the fire. The Nancy Fire Department was also called in to assist for additional water.

No injuries were reported from the fire. Kazsuk said he appreciates the quick response by everyone involved.
