Lady Lakers fall in district championship as Metcalfe hits putback to claim title

Last night’s 16th District Championship game went down-to-the-wire in front of a nearly full house at Laker Gym, but the Metcalfe County Lady Hornets came out on top, hitting a putback shot with just 3 seconds on the clock to defeat the Russell County Lady Lakers by a score of 47-45.

The game was back-and-forth throughout. The score was tied 13-13 after the first quarter and the Lady Lakers came out strong in the second quarter, building a 9-point lead at one point, but the Lady Hornets rallied back and the two teams went into halftime tied at 24.

The Lady Lakers were able to gain a slight edge in the third quarter, taking a 34-31 lead into the final frame. The two teams went back-and-forth down the stretch, but the game was decided when Metcalfe County’s Aubrey Glass grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed layup from Jozie Allen and was able to make the putback with about 3 seconds remaining.

The Lady Lakers weren’t able to get a shot off in the final three seconds, securing the Metcalfe County win. That makes four district titles in a row for the Lady Hornets.

Rachel Bolin led Russell County last night, finishing with a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

By being the district runner-up, the Lady Lakers advance to the region tournament, where they will play either Franklin-Simpson, Bowling Green, or Warren East.

The draw for the 4th Region tournament will take place today. We’ll bring you more information when it is released.
