Rocket Docket program grounded for now

The Rocket Docket program is grounded, for now at least.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Matthew Leveridge appeared before the fiscal court earlier this week and requested the program, which has been in operation for 12 years, not be renewed right now, with the contract for the program set to expire at the end of the month.

Leveridge pointed to a low number of people in the program, and claimed that recent legislation at the state level aimed at reforming the state’s bail policies were the culprit for lower numbers and thus lower savings to the county.

The program, operated through the commonwealth’s attorney’s office, aims to help expedite court proceedings for non-violent, low-level offenders and lower the cost to the county jail.
