Strong to severe storms push through the area Sunday night

Strong to severe thunderstorms with powerful wind gusts, hail, and torrential rainfall pushed through the area late Sunday night, knocking out power to thousands of customers in Russell and surrounding counties.

Trees, limbs and utility lines were some of the casualties from the Sunday night storms as they dropped in from the northwest as the sun went down.

South Kentucky RECC and Kentucky Utilities combined to report over 3,000 customers without electricity in Russell County alone during the peak of the storm.

The Lake Cumberland area was at an enhanced level 3 risk for severe weather yesterday as was much of the state.

Multiple tornado warnings, very heavy rainfall, hail, intense lightning and straight-line winds in excess of 70 miles per hour were commonplace in many locations.

Laker Country 104.9 was on-air and online with our Facebook Live feed throughout the evening, informing folks of the severe weather situation and taking damage reports as they were called in to our studio.
