Wednesday begins Severe Weather Awareness Week

Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 1st through Tuesday, March 7th, has been designated by Gov. Andy Beshear as Severe Weather Awareness Week.

During the week, the National Weather Service offices across the state and Kentucky Emergency Management, will be promoting spring weather safety.

On Wednesday March 1st, a statewide tornado drill will occur at  9:07 a.m. central time. Weather officials say the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alert System will not be activated during the drill, but NOAA Weather Radios will be activated during the test. Officials say the drill is a great time to test emergency preparedness at schools, businesses, and at home.

In 2022, Kentucky communities had between 110 and 130 thunderstorm risk days, some of which included large hail, damaging winds, flash flooding and tornadoes. This is roughly one out of every three days of the year that Kentuckians are exposed to lightning risk, among other thunderstorm hazards.
