Russell County basketball teams fall to Cumberland County in 16th District Tournament

The Russell County Laker and Lady Laker basketball teams both fell to Cumberland County in the opening round of the 16th District Tournament on Sunday.

By losing in the first round, neither team will advance to the region tournament for the second-straight year.

In the first game, the Lady Lakers fell by a score of 36-32.

Jaterria Coffey led the way for Russell County with 12 points, followed by Hannah Yates with 6, Aniyah Coffey with 5, Addy Abrell with 4, Addison Hart with 3, and Maleah Preston with 2.

The loss wraps up a tough season for the Lady Lakers, who finish the 2022-2023 season with a final record of 7-23.

In the second game of the day, the Lakers fell by a score of 61-51.

Braydon Cerrato led Russell County with 17 points, followed by Mayes Gosser with 9, Owen Loy with 8, Maddox Shearer with 6, and Trace Stringer and Byron Kirkland-Lundy with 4 each.

The loss caps a tough season for the Lakers with a final record of 10-21.

In their regular season finales on Friday night, the Lady Lakers and Lakers split a doubleheader against Rockcastle County.

The Lady Lakers fell by a score of 54-28, while the Lakers won 73-64.
