Shop with a Cop program assists more than 20 local children

Local law enforcement officers and other volunteers hit the store last weekend with area children for the annual Shop with a Cop program.

The program provides Christmas gifts and the experience of shopping with a local law enforcement officer for more than 20 children in Russell County.

According to Russell County Sheriff’s Deputy Nathan Bradshaw, the president of the organization that provides Shop with a Cop, 21 children from Russell County are selected with seven being selected from each school by family resource and school officers.

Law enforcement officers involved collect donations year-round for the annual event, and are assisted by court security officers, Russell County Detention Center staff and jailer Bobby Dunbar, deputies with the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, and civilian volunteers. A couple officers from the Russell Springs Police Department joined in on the event this year, according to Bradshaw.

The Shop with a Cop event is a team effort with help from school personnel and many volunteers that help make it possible, Bradshaw told WJRS News.

The group will also be providing fruit baskets to residents at Fair Oaks Nursing Home later this week.
