Lavern Bennett, age 87, of Russell Springs

Lavern Bennett, of Russell Springs, passed away Friday, July 22, 2022, at Danville Health and Rehabilitation Center, in Danville.  He was 87 years of age.

Born May 22, 1935, in Russell County, he was a son of the late Olis Elmer and Velva Wilmerth Patterson Bennett.  Lavern was well-known in the community for “Bennett’s Produce”, a fruit and vegetable stand that he managed at various locations in the county, for over 50 years.   When he wasn’t busy working, he enjoyed playing cards and Chinese checkers. Lavern also enjoyed talking to people. He was known for “telling stories” that were “maybe not all true.”  Lavern dearly loved his family and spending time with all of them.

Survivors include his wife, Shannon Coomer Bennett; a son, Mike (and Lisa) Bennett, of Russell Springs; a daughter, Diana (and Wayne) Hockensmith, of Frankfort; a brother, Winston (and Brenda) Bennett, of Columbia; a sister-in-law, Sheila Bennett, of Somerset; five grandchildren, Jason Ford, Amy Hockensmith, Jeremy Hockensmith, Jamie Elmore, and Heather Elmore; sixteen great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Lavern is preceded in death by two brothers; Louis Bennett and Paul Bennett; and a sister, Orean Whittle.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, July 25, 2022, at Bernard Funeral Home, with Bro. Billy Silverman officiating.  Burial will follow in Coffey’s Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of services, Monday, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Mikie Elmore, Donnie Elmore, Tyler Atchley, Jason Ford, Tracey Bennett, and Bo Roy.
