Former Columbia Police Chief pleads not guilty to theft of city funds

Former Columbia Police Chief Jason Cross entered a not guilty plea in federal court on charges that he stole more than $25,000 from the City of Columbia.

Cross was indicted on charges that he stole more than $25,000 from the police department evidence locker and the city’s drug purchase fund between February 2020 and February 2021.

In a recent court appearance, Cross pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled for telephonic proceedings before Chief Judge Greg N. Stivers on April 14.

Cross served as the Columbia Police Chief for 10 years before retiring in March 2021.

If convicted, Cross would face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
