Local agencies come together to provide resource officer at JES

While a grant to provide a school resource officer at Jamestown Elementary School was not approved, local government agencies came together to ensure that a resource officer would be placed at the lone remaining school in the district that didn’t have one.

At Monday night’s Russell County Board of Education meeting, the final approval went into place for the interlocal agreement that splits the cost of the JES officer between the board of education, the Jamestown City Council, the Russell County Fiscal Court, and the Russell County Sheriff’s Office.

Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston announced last week that Jamie Rogers will assume the duties as the SRO at Jamestown Elementary beginning Jan. 3.

“I want to thank all those entities with the school board, the Jamestown City Council, the fiscal court, and the sheriff’s office for providing this resource officer to Jamestown Elementary,” Russell County Schools Superintendent Michael Ford said.

“When the grant didn’t turn out like we hoped, we just went to Plan B, and I’m really thankful you all stepped up,” Polston said during Thursday night’s meeting of the Jamestown City Council. “This will go a long way to making sure our children at Jamestown Elementary are protected.”
