Early local candidate filings generating interest

After just three days of early candidate filings, it is clear next year’s county elections are generating lots of interest.

Several persons filed their papers last week to seek various county offices.

The most interest so far appears to be for County Clerk. Four candidates have filed for that office, including two current deputy clerks and the current county treasurer.   The incumbent, Sue Popplewell Brockman, is widely rumored to not be seeking re-election.

The offices of County Judge Executive and Sheriff are also drawing early attention with multiple candidates filing in each of those.

Also next year, voters in Russell and Wayne counties will select a Circuit Judge.

Current Judge Vernon Miniard, Jr. has indicated he may not seek re-election. Commonwealth Attorney Matthew Leveridge of Jamestown and former State Senator Sara Beth Gregory of Monticello have both indicated their intentions to file for that office.

The current district Judges, Mike Lawson and Scarlett Latham, both of Albany, are expected to seek re-election and no names have surfaced as possible challengers to either of them.

The filing deadline is currently set for Friday, January 7th
