The proposed school calendar for 2021-2022 would close school for Good Friday and Veterans Day, according to Russell County Schools Superintendent Michael Ford.
The board of education held its first hearing for the proposed calendar Monday night after two meetings of the school calendar committee.
There was controversy last year regarding whether school would be in session on Veterans Day, ultimately resulting in it being a holiday for the school district. This year, the calendar committee is recommending that Veterans Day be a school holiday, while also doing so for Good Friday. Ford said in years past, the district had opted not to have school on Good Friday, but school had been in session on the Friday before Easter Sunday in recent years.
Under the proposed calendar, the 2021-2022 school year would begin on Aug. 18, 2021 for students.
