One of the nation’s most unique shopping events returns next week as the 127 Yard Sale, promoted as “The World’s Longest Yard Sale,” takes place Thursday, August 6th through Sunday, August 9th. The annual event stretches nearly 690 miles through six states, including communities along U.S. 127 in Russell, Casey, and Clinton counties.
The four-day event is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of shoppers and vendors from across the United States and beyond, all searching for antiques, collectibles, handcrafted items, and one-of-a-kind bargains.
For local communities, the yard sale is about much more than bargain hunting. Lake Cumberland Tourism Director Danielle Wilson says restaurants, gas stations, hotels, campgrounds, convenience stores, and other businesses typically experience one of their busiest weekends of the year as visitors spend money throughout the region.
Wilson says the annual 127 Yard Sale helps fill in a gap in the summer tourist season, generating revenue for additional promotion of Russell County and Lake Cumberland.
Motorists should also be prepared for bumper-to-bumper traffic, especially along U.S. 127, where slow-moving vehicles, pedestrians, and shoppers frequently stop at roadside sales. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, remain patient, and watch carefully for people crossing the highway.
The 127 Yard Sale began in Tennessee in 1987 and has grown into an annual tradition that showcases small-town America while providing a significant economic boost for communities along the route.
