The Russell County Transfer Station and Recycling Center continues to stay busy, handling hundreds of tons of trash and unwanted materials each week.
Ronald Johnson, who oversees the facility’s day-to-day operations, told WJRS News the transfer station receives an average of 550 to 600 tons of waste each week.
Johnson said dropping off trash, furniture and other unwanted items is generally a quick process. County employees and work-release inmates from the Russell County Detention Center unload residents’ trucks or trailers, with most visits taking less than ten minutes.
Once the material is unloaded, workers separate steel, aluminum and other recyclable items from the trash.
The recovered metal is then sold, and all proceeds are placed in Russell County’s general fund.
Johnson said last week the county received just over $1,000 from aluminum cans that workers had removed from loads brought to the facility—turning material that might otherwise have been discarded into additional revenue for the county.
