UK’s Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent for Russell County, Jonathan Oakes, says the recent stretch of extreme heat has created challenges for farmers and home gardeners across Russell County. Oakes says there are several steps producers and gardeners can take to protect crops while reducing stress on plants during prolonged hot weather.
Oakes says the weather has also created concerns for hay producers. He says the extended dry spell earlier this year, followed by the current stretch of excessive heat, has significantly impacted hay production and could create challenges for livestock producers throughout the remainder of the year.
Oakes says livestock should always have access to plenty of fresh, clean water and adequate shade to help prevent heat-related stress. While the weather has presented its share of obstacles this growing season, he says Russell County farmers are resilient and will continue adapting to the conditions while working to provide food and agricultural products for the community.
