The Somerset Police Department says it’s stepping up enforcement during Somernites Cruise weekends in an effort to protect the popular event, not disrupt it.
Police report a sharp increase in dangerous and disruptive behavior along the U.S. 27 cruise route following the downtown car show. Compared to April and May of last year, incidents involving reckless driving, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, fights, property damage, and DUI-related offenses have doubled—and in some cases tripled.
Chief Josh Wesley says increased police activity is aimed at preserving the family-friendly atmosphere that has made Somernites Cruise a community tradition for decades.
Officers will have a stronger presence during cruise weekends, with additional traffic enforcement and patrols. Police say reckless driving, street racing, burnouts, and other unlawful behavior will not be tolerated.
The department says it is working closely with Somernites Cruise organizers to ensure the event remains safe and enjoyable for residents and visitors for years to come.
