The Lake Cumberland area is seeing an increase in the number of cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough.
Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that poses a serious health risk, especially to infants and young children.
Jeff Neagle, Public Information Officer for the Lake Cumberland District Health Department, said data is still being gathered on the exact number of cases, but the state as a whole is seeing the highest numbers in recent years.
Infants and young children are among the groups who face the most serious risk. Neagle said it’s important that parents vaccinate their children to provide protection against the respiratory infection.
Neagle also gave parents some common symptoms to watch for.
Neagle said pregnant women, those with weakened immune systems, and those with chronic lung disease such as asthma are particularly at risk as well.
