Russell and most surrounding counties are under a heat advisory through Wednesday evening.
The National Weather Service in Louisville says heat index values will peak between 100 and 107 during that time. This includes Russell, Adair, Casey, Cumberland and Clinton counties.
The hot temperatures and high humidity can lead to heat-related illness.
Residents are reminded to drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned areas as much as possible. Residents are also reminded to check on their neighbors and those who do not have air-conditioning, particularly the elderly, children, and those with chronic illness.
Residents should take extra precaution when outside, like wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Strenuous activity should try to be limited to the early morning or late evening hours.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for those who work outdoors.
