Local unemployment increased in May

Russell County’s unemployment rate saw an increase last month.

The local unemployment rate came in at 5.3 percent, an increase of nearly 1 percent from May 2024.

Only McCreary County at 5.8 percent and Wayne County at 5.5 percent reported higher unemployment rates in the Lake Cumberland area last month. Clinton County also came in at 5.3 percent.

Cumberland County reported one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state at 3.8 percent. Adair County came in at 4.5 percent and Pulaski County wasn’t far behind at 4.7 percent. Casey County came in at just under 5 percent.

Russell County was one of 13 counties across the state that saw an increase in unemployment from May 2024 to May 2025. In the Lake Cumberland area, Casey County and Clinton County also saw increases during that time frame.
