A man and woman from Georgia were arrested in Monticello last week after they reportedly scammed a woman out of more than $80,000.
Monticello Police arrested 37-year-old Amit Patel and 28-year-old Dishaben Patel last week. The two allegedly impersonated agents with the Federal Trade Commission as part of a scam.
Reports are the woman received a notice on her computer to call a phone number after her computer froze. The two claimed to be FTC agents and said her information had been compromised.
The two demanded the woman withdraw $52,000 and place it in a shoebox inside a car as it drove by her home. The process was repeated again for a payment of $32,000.
When they demanded a third payment, Monticello Police were able to track the car down and make the arrests.
They are charged with engaging in organized crime, theft by deception, and knowingly exploiting an adult.
