Bill that would lower driver’s permit age to 15 advances out of committee

Teenagers in Russell County and across Kentucky could soon be eligible to apply for a driver’s permit a year earlier.

House Bill 15 advanced out of committee in the state legislature yesterday. The bill, which is co-sponsored by Representative Josh Branscum of Russell County, would allow 15-year-olds to apply for a driver’s permit.

Current state law requires a person to be 16-years-old to apply for a driver’s permit.

The bill now heads to the Kentucky House of Representatives for approval.
