Sheriff’s Office turns over more than $42,000 in excess fees to fiscal court

The Russell County Sheriff’s Office announced this week that it is turning over more than $42,000 in excess fees to the fiscal court as part of the sheriff’s final fee settlement.

Sheriff Derek Polston said it’s the largest amount turned over to the fiscal court from the sheriff’s office during his tenure as sheriff and he believes it is the most turned over since Larry Bennett served as sheriff.

Polston said he’s proud of the work of the sheriff’s office has done in cutting costs while still purchasing new equipment.

Polston added he hopes those excess fees will go a long way toward providing hazardous duty retirement for sheriff’s deputies.

Members of the fiscal court have said they are open to implementing hazardous duty retirement in the next budget, with a portion of the funding coming from excess fees turned over by the sheriff’s office.
