Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston told Russell County magistrates Monday night that a grant funding two school resource officers in Russell County is set to expire in less than 90 days, and could leave two schools in Russell County without an officer permanently on campus.
The grant, which was received three years ago, provides funding for school resource officers at Russell Springs Elementary and Salem Elementary, and will expire June 30 unless an extension is granted.
The cost of placing resource officers at the two schools would be around $94,000.
Polston said he plans to meet with the Russell Springs City Council on Thursday and the board of education next Monday about the issue to gather input from those groups.
