A Russell Springs man was killed and another arrested as the result of a two-vehicle collision on the Cumberland Parkway Monday afternoon, according to Kentucky State Police.
State Police say it happened at around 2:30 Monday afternoon. They say 28-year-old Christopher Austin of Russell Springs was traveling west on the parkway in a 2016 Kia Optima when he left the roadway on the left shoulder. When Austin steered back onto the road, he entered the path of a 2020 Jeep Cherokee operated by 66-year-old Maylon Brown, Jr, who was also traveling west.
Brown was pronounced dead at the scene by the Russell County Coroner’s Office. Austin refused medical treatment at the scene.
Austin was arrested by Kentucky State Police. He is charged with vehicular homicide when under the influence of drugs, driving under the influence of a controlled substance – second offense, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and reckless driving.
He was lodged in the Russell County Detention Center. The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Brandon Roark with Kentucky State Police Post 15.
